Ever since the advent of small affordable CCTV systems, protection of property has been a paramount use. Originally most of the CCTV systems were located indoors and utilized as a deterrent against shoplifters. As CCTV systems, particularly cameras have become smaller and more inexpensive, the CCTV cameras have moved outdoors and now provide property owners an added measure of security in protecting their property.

While the utilization of CCTV systems indoors is common knowledge, many people do not recognize that there are cameras out of doors also. These cameras monitor everything from the parking lot at Wal Mart to the gas pump at the neighborhood convenience store. These cameras are there to protect the property from theft and or vandalism.

Cameras that are mounted out in the natural environment can come in all size and shape. Some cameras are self contained in their own housing. Some are contained in an environmental housing. These environmental housings can be rectangular or inside of a dome. A smoked glass or a glazed cover protects many cameras mounted inside of a dome. The smoked glass or glazing permits the camera to see out but the person on the ground to not be able to see inside. The cameras mounted inside the dome are often mounted on heads that have the ability to pan and tilt. Additionally these cameras are equipped with zoom lenses that have a telephoto capability. This head permits the camera to scan the entire area around the dome. If an intruder is detected, the automatic scan can be halted and the camera positioned manually. The telephoto lens can be zoomed in on the intruder and identification made.

Exterior CCTV cameras and their housings are often subject to vandalism. This vandalism may be teens attempting to destroy something “just for the fun of it” or an actual intruder attempting to deny security their identification. Manufacturers are well aware of this problem and for areas that are or may be subject to vandalism provide ballistic rated housings. These ballistic rated housings are strong enough to withstand a bullet shot at the camera housing. More expensive than standard housings, for many areas, ballistic rated housings provide a cost savings to the owners of the property.

The utilization of CCTV systems at a property site, provide a cost savings for the owner of the property. An after hours security staff is no longer needed. Roving patrols of security staff can be ended. The CCTV system is alert and watching the property for the owner. The owner can be assured that the CCTV system is providing the necessary security without the expense of employees. The cost savings of eliminating security staff and replacing that staff with a CCTV system can be substantial.

With the growth and prevalence of the Internet, there no longer is a need for a security guard to be onsite to monitor the CCTV system. Through the use of the Internet and motion detection, a camera viewing a plant can transmit the images to a central station when motion is detected. The operators at the central station can notify the proper law enforcement offices if trespass is detected. Interior cameras in stores still protect against shoplifting. Exteriors of the building or plant are now likewise protected by CCTV systems. This protection is affordable, reliable and accurate. CCTV systems will, in future years become more prevalent and more and more businesses and even cities and towns will utilize this technology.
