Door lock repair is best left to professionals, though there are some small things you can do yourself. Many of these things are simple maintenance practices so your will be less likely. Understand your skill level. If you do not have a locksmith’s training, chances are you could make things worse for yourself by trying to do extensive repairs.
If the lock pulls out of the doorknob, or sounds like something is rattling inside, or no longer lets your key enter, you may have to call a professional. If you break off your key in the door, the repair bill could be bigger.
What you can do for minor repairs mainly revolve around keeping the lock clean. If the lock turns with difficulty, it could mean there is a lot of dust in the lock. Blow condensed air through it once a month or so to keep dust from settling and making the gears stick. Another thing to do is to keep the lock oiled so it turns well and does not do damage to itself when it turns. In the winter when you locks freeze, you can hold your key over a flame, get it hot, and put it carefully in the lock.
Know, though, that if something in the lock is actually broken, it is probably too delicate or complicated for you to fix. There are far more parts in a lock than one would guess. If you do not have the training and do not want to hire a locksmith, you could always just remove the lock yourself and replace it.
Any hardware store should have a ton of options for doorknobs. Try to find one that very closely matches your current knob. Make sure it can be attached in the same way and locks in the same way from the same side or sides. Locks should be able to be attached with a Phillips head screw driver. Also make sure it comes with a key that is individual to this lock alone.
With your door unlocked and ajar, unscrew the knob from its place on the door. Most handles and doors fit a certain guideline when it comes to the size and position. You therefore should not have to worry that one knob will be differently positioned on your door or will not fit at all, unless you have very unusual or old door.
Make sure the package with the new lock in it has instructions. You will also save yourself a lot of time if you have a power drill with the right attachment. It is a way to fasten the lock tighter than you could do by hand.
